Pharmacy Residency is something I have been looking forward to for a very long time. I want to make the most out of my year of residency and in order to do that I have come up with a few objectives and competencies.
Objectives:
- Identify new medical conditions and learn how to teach myself about them
During my time at UBC I was taught a vast amount of different medical conditions. These conditions were organized into modules such as: cardiology, nephrology, endocrinology…etc. Within these modules we were instructed on the pathophysiology, medicinal chemistry, therapeutics, and disease state monitoring. This was always done in a relatively organized fashion. We then were able to build on key topics within these modules in our integration activities, which allowed us in solidify information. However, in real practise this type of learning will not occur when I encounter a new medical condition. During my time in residency I must create a process which will allow me to teach myself about new medical conditions.
2. Learn how to teach other health care professionals about new medications and current literature
I will accomplish this by:
- Creating a standardized process of presenting literature to other health care professionals
- When presenting on a new medication I will adapt the presentation to the specific health care professionals I am presenting to, which will help to ensure they are able to take away valuable information for their practise
- Presenting signs, symptoms of diseases and adverse drug reactions in a head to toe approach
- Ensuring the audience is following along by asking questions periodically throughout each presentation
3. Improve time management skills and attain a healthy work life balance
Residency is going to require a lot of hard work and commitment, and in order to succeed I must be able to manage my time effectively while on rotation and at home. I plan to manage my time effectively by setting short- and long-term goals for all assignments, and projects. This will allow me to ensure I meet deadline and am able to take valuable “me” time.
4. Learn how to be confident in my decision making
I will accomplish this by:
- Asking for constant feedback from preceptors
- Noting any difficulties, I am having, and developing solutions to overcome them
- Discussing strategies which have worked for other residents
5. Improve my systematic approach to patient care
I will accomplish this by:
- Using a stepwise approach to each patient
- Assessing patients as a whole and focusing in on each medical condition
- Identifying drug therapy problems and determining a solution to them with multiple alternatives
